Federal Investigation Expands into Cyberattacks Targeting Water Systems Across Multiple U.S. States

A federal investigation led by the FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has expanded following coordinated cyberattacks on municipal water systems in Minnesota, Michigan, and other states. Over 30 water systems in Minnesota and nine in Michigan were affected, though authorities report no known threat to public health. The incidents targeted operational technology used to monitor and control water infrastructure, with federal authorities examining potential links to hackers associated with Iran.
