FBI and CISA Warn of Escalating Cyberattacks on U.S. Water Systems

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a warning about a 'significant escalation' of cyberattacks targeting water utilities across multiple states. Hackers have reportedly locked operators out of their operational technology networks, modified passwords, and changed IP addresses, forcing some operators to issue boil-water notices and revert to manual operations. The attacks have spread to at least seven states, with some leading to flooding and reduced water pressure.
