Supreme Court to Hear Challenges to State Assault Weapons Bans

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear two cases, Viramontes v. Cook County (Illinois) and Grant v. Higgins (Connecticut), which challenge state-level assault weapons bans. This action provides the Court an opportunity to clarify the application of its 2022 Bruen decision regarding Second Amendment rights and restrictions on specific types of firearms. Oral arguments are anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027.
