U.S. Air Force Demonstrates AI-Enabled Autonomous Fighter Jet Intercepts in Flight Tests
The U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin have successfully demonstrated an artificial intelligence agent autonomously flying a fighter jet and executing air intercepts using live infrared sensor data. During recent flight tests in April at Edwards Air Force Base, the Air Force's X-62 Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft (VISTA) performed 27 autonomous air intercepts across eight flights. This development marks a critical step in the ongoing advancement of AI-enabled combat capabilities for national security.
