HHS Unveils Proposed Head Start Reforms to Expand Access and Empower Parents

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a new proposed rule, "Reducing Federal Burden for Head Start Programs," aimed at expanding access, reducing administrative burden, and refocusing the program on early childhood development. The proposed rule is projected to preserve or expand up to 236,000 Head Start slots nationwide and save $2.2 billion, representing the largest known reinvestment in the program in 61 years. It also emphasizes health, nutrition, and physical exercise requirements and restores flexibility to local programs.
