Congressional Democrats Demand Trump Administration Reverse New DHS Rule on Asylum Seekers

Representatives Morgan McGarvey and Pramila Jayapal, along with 69 other Congressional Democrats, have sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) urging the withdrawal of a new rule. This rule allows asylum officers to reject affirmative asylum cases without an interview, directly referring individuals to immigration court for deportation. Critics argue it will deny fair consideration, especially for vulnerable asylum seekers, and exacerbate the existing backlog in immigration courts. The rule comes amidst increased ICE arrests at airports, including individuals with legal status or pending applications.
