Federal Monitorship of Teamsters Union Ends After 37 Years

A U.S. District Court has approved a joint motion by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Department of Justice, officially ending 37 years of federal oversight of the union. The monitorship, initiated in 1989 to eradicate organized crime influence and ensure democratic elections, concludes after the union demonstrated it has developed robust internal controls to detect, investigate, and resolve corruption. This marks the end of the longest monitorship of any union or entity in U.S. history.
