DHS Finalizes Rule Ending 'Duration of Status' for International Students and Exchange Visitors

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finalized a rule that will end the 'Duration of Status' (D/S) framework for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors, effective September 15, 2026. Under the new rule, most international students will be admitted for a fixed period, typically the length of their academic program or up to four years, requiring them to apply for extensions and pay additional fees for longer stays or Optional Practical Training (OPT).
