U.S. Drought Conditions Worsen in Western Regions, New Assessment Framework Urged
Droughts in the United States are becoming more intense and unpredictable, prompting a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to urge the development of a new drought assessment framework. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor (released June 25) highlights a 'Corn Belt split,' with D2-D4 drought conditions gripping the western half while the eastern half experiences surplus moisture. Pennsylvania American Water is encouraging water conservation as approximately 30% of Pennsylvania faces abnormally dry conditions. In Colorado, the Genesee Water & Sanitation District, while currently at Level '1' Voluntary Water Conservation, anticipates very low Bear Creek flows by mid-to-late June, potentially leading to outdoor watering restrictions from June 27 through August 26. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center forecasts drought development over the Pacific Northwest and Northern California through August 2026.
