A dangerous and prolonged heat wave is stifling much of the Midwest, South, and East Coast of the United States, with extreme heat warnings in effect. Heat index values are expected to soar above 110°F in many areas, including major cities like Boston, New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta, through Saturday. Amtrak has canceled trains in the Northeast due to the heat.
