NIFC Reports 68 Large Wildfires Active, National Preparedness Level 4, Widespread Smoke Impacts

As of July 17, 2026, 68 large wildfires are active across the U.S., engaging over 17,482 firefighters. The National Preparedness Level is at 4, indicating severe activity. New incidents are reported in the Northwest due to lightning, and fires in Northern Minnesota, including the Little Knife Fire, show extreme behavior and have crossed into Canada. Wildfire smoke from these fires is significantly impacting air quality and reducing temperatures across the Great Lakes and Northeast. So far this year, 39,764 fires have burned over 3.67 million acres.
