Environment Canada Implements New Polygon-Based Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings

Environment and Climate Change Canada has launched a significant upgrade to its severe weather warning system, introducing polygon-based warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. This new system allows forecasters to target specific geographic areas at risk, replacing broader forecast zones and aiming to provide more localized and timely alerts. The first polygon thunderstorm warning was issued for an area west of Edmonton. Other alerts, such as severe thunderstorm watches and heat warnings, will continue to use traditional forecast zones.
