National Preparedness Level 5 as 101 Large Wildfires Burn Across the US

The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reports that the US remains at National Preparedness Level 5 due to significant wildfire activity. As of August 12, 2026, firefighters are working to contain 101 uncontained large fires nationwide, with the Northwest being the most active region. Over 6.4 million acres have burned this year, significantly above the 10-year average. Elevated to critical fire conditions are expected in eastern New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and southern Kansas due to high temperatures and strong winds.
