Typhoon Saudel (Obet) strengthens, nears Philippine area of responsibility

Typhoon Saudel, to be locally named Obet upon entering the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), was located 1,660 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon as of 3 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2026. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kph (109 mph) and gusts up to 215 kph (134 mph), moving west-northwestward at 30 kph (19 mph). While it may strengthen into a super typhoon, it is currently not expected to directly affect Philippine weather or sea conditions over the next three days.
