Ross Fire in Texas Explodes to Over 78 Square Miles, Forcing Evacuations

The Ross Fire in north central Texas has rapidly expanded to char more than 78 square miles (200 square kilometers) in less than a day, burning structures at a youth camp and forcing evacuations and school closures. Fueled by strong winds, extremely hot, and dry conditions, the fire remains only slightly contained as of August 26, 2026. Emergency officials anticipate further growth as temperatures rise.
