National Interagency Fire Center reports 93 large wildfires and high-risk fire potential in Western US.

As of August 26, 2026, firefighters are actively working to contain 93 large wildfires across the United States. Yesterday, 148 new fires were reported, including 14 large ones. So far in 2026, 51,295 wildfires have burned over 7.9 million acres, significantly exceeding the 10-year average. High-risk significant fire potential is forecast for Idaho, western Montana, and the northern Great Basin due to isolated to scattered mixed wet/dry thunderstorms. Breezy westerly winds (25-35 mph) combined with low humidity (10-20%) and temperatures 10-15°F above normal will further elevate fire risk in the northern Great Basin, inland Pacific Northwest, and the Sierra Front. Critical fire conditions persist across east Texas into Louisiana due to very hot, dry, and breezy weather.
