Tropical Storm Karina Strengthens in Eastern Pacific, Forecast to Become a Hurricane

Tropical Storm Karina formed on August 27, 2026, well offshore the coast of southwest Mexico. As of the 8:00 PM MST advisory (0300 UTC August 28), maximum sustained winds increased to 50 mph (85 km/h), and strengthening is expected to continue, with Karina forecast to become a hurricane over the weekend. Swells generated by Karina will begin to affect portions of the coast of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula this weekend, causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
