Hurricane Karina forms in Pacific, expected to strengthen; Tropical Storm Lowell also active

Hurricane Karina has formed in the Eastern Pacific with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (Category 1) and is forecast to become a major hurricane as it moves over open waters, though it poses no immediate threat to land. Swells from Karina are expected to cause dangerous surf and rip current conditions along parts of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula. Separately, Tropical Storm Lowell is active in the Central Pacific with 50 mph winds and could become a hurricane by Monday night or Tuesday, also posing no immediate threat to land.
