World Meteorological Organization Warns of Strengthening El Niño and Increased Risk of Extreme Weather into 2027

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that the strengthening El Niño event is highly likely to persist through February 2027, with a nearly 100% probability. It is expected to peak towards the end of 2026, increasing the global risk of extreme heat, droughts, and floods. WMO forecasts an increased likelihood of above-normal temperatures across almost all land areas during September–November 2026, alongside significant changes in rainfall patterns.
