Japan Meteorological Agency Issues Level 5 Emergency Landslide Warning for Niijima Island Amid Record Rainfall
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued its highest-level landslide warning, a Level 5 Emergency Warning, for Niijima Island. This comes after a record 381 millimeters (15 inches) of rain fell over the last 24 hours through Monday. Additionally, Level 4 landslide alerts are in effect for parts of Chiba, Saitama, Tokyo, and Fukushima prefectures in eastern Japan, where massive rains also struck from the early hours of Monday. Weather officials warn of more rainfall in wide areas facing the Pacific.
