Japan Meteorological Agency Issues Highest Landslide Warning for Niijima Island Amid Heavy Rain

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a Level 5 Emergency Warning for landslides on Niijima Island after more than 480 millimeters of rain fell over 24 hours, marking the largest amount since local records began. Heavy rainfall also impacted eastern Japan, including Tokyo, disrupting train services and forcing school closures. A Level 4 landslide alert is in effect for parts of Chiba and Saitama prefectures. One fatality has been reported in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, due to a submerged car. More rainfall is anticipated in wide areas facing the Pacific.
