Japan Meteorological Agency Issues Level 5 Landslide Emergency Warning for Niijima Island Amid Record Rainfall
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued its highest-level landslide emergency warning (Level 5) for Niijima Island after a record 381 to 480 millimeters (15-19 inches) of rain fell over the last 24 hours. Level 4 landslide alerts are also in effect for parts of Chiba, Saitama, Tokyo, and Fukushima prefectures. Heavy rains have caused disruptions, including train service interruptions and school closures. One fatality was reported in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, after a car was submerged. Weather officials warn of more rainfall in wide areas facing the Pacific.
