Japan Meteorological Agency Issues Highest Level Landslide Warning for Niijima Island Amid Record Rainfall

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a Level 5 Emergency Warning for landslides on Niijima Island after a record 381 millimeters (15 inches) of rain fell over 24 hours. Massive rains also struck eastern Japan, including Tokyo, leading to a Level 4 landslide alert for parts of Chiba and Saitama prefectures and central Fukushima. The heavy rainfall has already caused disruptions, including the closure of 3,661 educational institutions and one fatality in Iwaki.
