Japan Issues Highest-Level Rain and Landslide Warnings Amid Widespread Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued its highest-level emergency warning for heavy rain and flooding in parts of central Japan, including areas along the Shonai River in Aichi and Gifu prefectures, notably Nagoya. Record rainfall of 104.5 millimeters in one hour was observed in Nagoya. A Level 5 Emergency Warning for landslides was also issued for Niijima Island due to record rainfall, with Level 4 landslide alerts in effect for parts of Chiba, Saitama, and Fukushima prefectures. Heavy rain is forecast to continue across wide areas of Japan through Thursday, with up to 200 millimeters expected in the Tokai and Kinki regions, and up to 120 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin, including Tokyo. Residents are urged to remain vigilant against landslides, flooding, and rising river levels.
