Japan Issues Highest-Level Rain and Landslide Warnings Amid Severe Flooding in Central Regions

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a Level 5 Emergency Warning for heavy rain and flooding in parts of central Japan, including areas along the Shonai River in Aichi and Gifu prefectures, and the city of Nagoya. Record rainfall of 104.5 millimeters in one hour was recorded in Nagoya on Tuesday evening. Heavy rain is forecast to continue across wide areas of Japan through Thursday, with up to 200 mm expected in the Tokai and Kinki regions, 150 mm in Shikoku, and 120 mm in Kanto-Koshin, including Tokyo. Residents are urged to remain vigilant against landslides, flooding, and rising river levels. A Level 5 Emergency Warning for landslides was also issued for Niijima Island on Monday after 381 mm of rain fell in 24 hours.
