WMO Report Warns of Intensifying Global Water Cycle, Rising Drought and Flood Risks, and Underestimated Wildfire Smoke Hazards

A new World Meteorological Organization report indicates the global water cycle is becoming more intense and unpredictable, increasing the frequency of severe rainfall and prolonged droughts. Terrestrial water reserves have declined since 2014–2016, with new drought periods expected in 2026. The report also highlights a rise in extreme wildfires and significantly underestimated health risks from smoke, projecting a substantial increase in smoke-related deaths by 2050.
