Sahel Region Faces Critical Humanitarian Crisis with 24 Million Needing Aid

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has released its 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Overview for the Sahel, highlighting that 24.3 million people across Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Cameroon, and Nigeria are in critical need of humanitarian assistance. The crisis is driven by spreading violence, climate shocks, and severe food insecurity, with over 15 million people expected to face crisis levels of hunger during the upcoming lean season.
