UN Security Council Warns of 'Imminent Risk of Mass Atrocities' in Sudan's El Obeid

The United Nations Security Council has expressed alarm over reports of a substantial military buildup by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) around El Obeid, Sudan, warning of an “imminent risk of mass atrocities” if a potential ground offensive proceeds. The Council demanded an immediate halt to the assault and called on all parties to cease hostilities, protect civilians, and ensure unhindered humanitarian access. The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023 has already led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced.
