The UN warns of a devastating global impact from the returning El Niño phenomenon, pledging $100 million for anticipatory action.
Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, issued a statement warning that El Niño is back and is expected to bring extreme heat, droughts, and floods that will devastate communities across Latin America, Eastern and Southern Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. This comes amidst widespread conflict, increasing displacement, and soaring fuel, fertilizer, and food prices.
