Madagascar on Brink of Worsening Hunger Crisis, Half a Million Children at Risk of Malnutrition
Madagascar is facing a dramatically escalating hunger crisis, with projections indicating a 75% increase in the number of people at crisis levels of food insecurity later this year. Save the Children reports that approximately 502,000 children under five, or one in ten, are suffering or expected to suffer from acute malnutrition between May 2026 and April 2027. This severe humanitarian emergency is attributed to the lean season, high food prices, and climate-related shocks, with nearly 426,000 people anticipated to face emergency conditions, more than double the current figure.
