NATO to Assume Command of Ukraine Security Assistance Group as US Scales Back Role

NATO is set to take over command of the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U) from the United States, a transition expected to unfold over the next year. This move signifies a broader effort by Washington to scale back its military officer presence in Europe and shift more responsibility for coordinating military aid and training for Ukraine to its European allies. While the US will reduce its leadership role, officials have reassured that American arms deliveries to Ukraine will continue. SAG-U, established in November 2022, has been central to coordinating over $60 billion in US defense contributions to Ukraine.
