New EU Packaging Rules Take Effect, Restricting 'Forever Chemicals' and Aiming for Waste Reduction

New European Union regulations on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR) came into effect on August 12, 2026. These rules introduce strict limits on 'forever chemicals' (PFAS) in food-contact packaging and set targets for reducing overall packaging waste by 5% by 2030 and 15% by 2040 compared to 2018 levels. The legislation also mandates that all packaging must be recyclable by 2030 and includes provisions for banning certain single-use packaging by 2030 where sustainable alternatives exist. The European Commission stated these measures aim to protect the environment and human health, strengthen the single market, and foster a circular economy.
