WHO calls for greater protection for aid workers on World Humanitarian Day 2026 amidst rising attacks

On World Humanitarian Day 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global appeal for enhanced protection of civilians, health workers, and humanitarian personnel, and for an end to impunity for attacks against them. The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region has recorded 438 attacks on healthcare this year, resulting in over 773 deaths and 1123 injuries, with more than 117 million people in the region requiring humanitarian assistance in 2026.
