Catastrophic Glacier Collapse in Nepal and Tibet Kills Hundreds, Thousands Missing

A glacier collapse on August 26 triggered catastrophic flooding in Nepal and Tibet, resulting in at least 676 deaths and approximately 3,000 people still missing. Bad weather conditions have severely hampered rescue operations. Nepal estimates reconstruction costs could reach US$4 billion to US$5 billion and is seeking specialized international assistance to manage one of 2026's major humanitarian disasters. Canada has pledged $5 million in aid and deployed consular officials, with 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents currently unaccounted for.
