Catastrophic Floods and Glacier Collapse Devastate Nepal-Tibet Border Region, Over 1,000 Dead

Catastrophic floods and mudflows along Nepal's Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river system, triggered by a glacier collapse last Wednesday, have resulted in over 1,000 reported deaths and more than 4,000 people still missing. A preliminary assessment by the UN Development Programme indicates at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris. The UN Environment Programme also highlighted the accelerating loss of glaciers globally as an "immediate" climate risk, increasing the likelihood of such devastating events.
