European Union Reaffirms Commitment to Multilateralism Ahead of UN General Assembly

The European Union, on September 9, 2026, reiterated its commitment to multilateralism as a key priority for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which will see the EU address member states on September 24. In response to increasing global fragmentation and violations of international law, the EU's engagement will focus on defending an effective multilateral system, advancing reforms across the UN's pillars (peace and security, sustainable development, human rights), strengthening the UN's peace and security architecture, and promoting prosperity and sustainable development. These priorities align with the EU's pledge to be a "predictable and credible partner" to the UN and support the UN80 initiative for organizational reform.
