France and Germany have jointly called for the creation of new European Union trade instruments to address "unprecedented challenges" to the bloc's trade system, including market-distorting practices and global macroeconomic imbalances. In a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz argued that existing measures are insufficient and proposed a "comprehensive framework" to diversify supply chains and counter unfair trade.
