No Candidate for Next UN Secretary-General Secures Full Support from All Five Security Council Powers

The latest straw poll for the selection of the next U.N. secretary-general revealed that none of the seven candidates has garnered the unanimous support of all five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, who hold veto power. This outcome leaves the door open for new candidates to emerge in the race to succeed António Guterres, who has served as the head of the United Nations for nearly a decade. The three leading candidates—Rebeca Grynspan, Rafael Grossi, and Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett—each received two 'discourage' votes from the veto-wielding powers.
